The Oliver Post Area

Please post the your entries in your WordPress/SoundCloud accounts first as you would a regular assignment. Then post your “Daily Meds” entry (Word Form) under this section along with you SoundCloud link (under the “Daily Meds” section the recording applies to) of your recording assignment of the day. Remember this is to be done everyday for the rest of the course.  Each day you will pick a topic/theme from a new page in the “Daily Meds” to create, record and write on. You will turn-in two daily assignments to this “Daily Med Blog” (Personal WordPress blog and Soundcloud recording) in one post under the “Students Designated Post Area” . Start with your WordPress Account first, then Musical Daily Meds Blog, then Copy and Paste that Link under this post in the “Leave a Reply” section. All posts on all three WordPress sites(1. Students account. 2. Musical Daily Meds. 3. Intro to Audio.) need to be labeled with the student’s name, time, week, day, date, and topic title at the beginning of the post (Example: John Doe, 11:25pm, Week 1 Day 3 April 28, Begin Again). Remember you can link all assignment topics to the “Daily Meds Topic” of choice to help aid in finding a source of inspiration that is best for your recording and video needs. The Daily Meds Workbook can be found at (https://musicaldailymeds.wordpress.com/the-workbook/).

  1. Creative Word: Grouping

For this audio clip I just recorded it off my phone, and it was just my history teacher talking to the class about our upcoming history assignments. I think this is a good recording that ties in to grouping because all the sounds are grouped together in one audio clip.

    Creative Experiment: Try a Friend

I think this creative experiment is good because you can bounce ideas off of each other, as well as build off of each other. You can do this in many ways, but since this is an audio course, you can do this experiment by working on the same piece of music and showing each other what things you added/took out.

    Daily Dose: Love Our Music

I like this because I can totally relate to it. I, as well as many others probably, am a perfectionist when it comes to making things that show me off. Sometimes it feels like there is always something to improve, and that it will never be good enough, but really I have to realize that some things are never going to be “perfect”\

    Daily Act: Be Gentle

Today I will focus on being the best I can be, and to learn to use my mistakes as building blocks towards achieving my goal.

  2. Creative Word: Connect

For this sound clip I just recorded it with my phone and it was me tapping my ipod on my chest. I thought this would create a pretty cool sound, as well as being useful for some sort of a beat when making music. It can relate to the word connect because when it gets used for a song, it will ultimately help pull everything together.

For this clip, again I chose to do another beat, but this time it was me banging the wall with my fist. It can be used with other beats and it will help all these beats connect together. Overall, these kinds of sounds are going to be the foundation of the music I make, that is why I do so many of them.

    Daily Dose: Lines of Communication

I will do my best to connect with myself on a spiritual level and a creative level. Sometimes it is best to put my trust in the greater being in the universe, and it is good to connect with God and myself on a creative and spiritual level as well, and sometimes at the same time.

    Daily Act: Conscious Communication

Today especially I will keep a conscious communication between myself, my music and my creative spirit. I plan on making some sort of music, and I will use this act to try and the best I can do.

    Creative Word: Nourish

This is my first attempt at trying to put some sounds together to make something that sounds kind of good-or at least interesting. I stayed up until 12:30 and got up at 5 to work on it, and I think I did okay considering how much time I spent on it. Instead of just starting from scratch, I am going to nourish it by adding more. I found this experience pretty cool though, because I learned about what I need to do, how to experiment, and how to completely change how some things sound.

    Creative Experiment: Tool Kit

    Rockband Microphone:

Pros-Has a USB connection so I can plug it into my computer, and record directly onto my computer

Cons-Not the best quality, but can still get the job done

    Phone Microphone:

Pros-Easily record, very portable, can plug in a USB to it and transfer or use email

Cons-Not the best quality (little mic)

    Digital Camera Microphone:

    Pros-Audio synced with video

Cons-Crappy mic, most likely not going to get the best sound while recording

    Polaroid Cube Microphone:

Pros-very tiny, Fit into small places

Cons-Have to connect to a computer to review footage

    Electric Keyboard:

Pros-Make a bunch of very unique sounds and melodies

Cons-Have to record to a computer, old, not portable

    Laptop:

    Pros-editing suite

Cons-Kind of need to have pre-recorded audio to edit

    Daily Dose: Baby Steps

This is totally true because I probably would not be able to do most of the things I do if I didn’t take baby steps. Like music for example. I have no background in music whatsoever, and now I am taking an audio course-where I have to make music. It really helps starting off small, like taking random recordings, and then taking the next steps to turn them into something bigger.

    Daily Act: Trust

Today I will just believe in myself and go with my gut feeling, and trust that I will make the right decision.

  4. Oliver Campbell – May 9 2015-9:55am-week 2-day 7

    Creative Word: Breakthrough

This sound was supposed to be a clock ticking but i think I just got a bunch of white noise. I was at my friends house, and we were both asleep, but the clock was ticking really loud, so I thought that this would be a very cool sound to record. But since I was all comfortable already, I just recorded it from where I was on my phone, but it turned out I got a lot of white noise. I the sound recording sense, I don’t think I necessarily made a breakthrough, but once I get this into a DAW I think the breakthroughs will come.

    Daily Experiment: Say Yes

Right now I am writing this blog post on my friend’s iPad (he is still asleep) and as I sit here I can here the music surrounding me. I can hear the really loud tick of the clock, and that acts as the beat, and then I hear the songs of the birds, and combined, it creates something really nice. Simple, but great . Now to get back to the experiment: . Today I find myself to have lots of opportunities about what I should do with my day. I could have left my friend’s house early to play this thing called pickleball with my family, but I chose not to. Now I am faced with the decision of whether or not I go to his team Ontario football team’s scrimmage or go home. I’ll probably go to the game because everyone’s going out to eat after. Of course this is only doable with my parents’ permission. There have been so many times in my life where I have said yes and it has gotten me places. Do I want a free massage, even if it is a guy? Sure, ‘cuz why not? Now I know why I have back pain in my lower back. Even the smallest things in life should be said yes to, because you never know when opportunity will strike.

    Daily Dose: Progress is Perfection

I totally agree with this because you can only reach your goal if you progress on your journey towards it. If you don’t keep track of progress you don’t know when you have reached your goal. I remember on the show Dragon’s Den, one of the dragons said that sometimes when they were really young and were just starting out in their restaurant they would put in an extra 3 bucks in the register just so it felt like they made a hundred dollars that day. Sometimes seeing our progress is the only thing that keeps us going, and that is another good reason why tracking progress is great for the creative person .

    Daily Act: Focus

Today I will focus on what is important and I will focus on the task at hand. Only with great focus comes great creativity (sometimes). I will keep working on my song and trying to improve myself and my creative musical skills.

  5. Creative Word: Invigorate

This sound was just me tapping really fast on my desk , and I feel it can add some really fast paced sounds to a song so it can add a bit of an invigorating effect.

    Creative Experiment: Old Solutions

When I look at my past recordings I didn’t really get the right sound I was looking for, but I think I just have to work on changing the pitches on them to get the sound I want. I am also pretty new to the program Audacity, so I think if I keep using it and experimenting with it I will get the outcome I want.

Daily Dose: No two creativities alike

When being creative with anything you have to go with what you think is right, and not care about being biased-being creative is to show off yourself and express yourself. I can relate this to when we discuss our Ford commercial campaign, because everyone has their own image of how the campaign should be run. We all have our own creative ideas, and our ideas come from our personalities and from what we stand by. Creativity can truly show one’s character.

    Daily Act: Visions

Today I will look for and embrace creativity in my day and I will do my best to inspire creativity in someone else.

  6. Creative Word: Wait

This sound recording is actually Mr Sloos playing the keyboard that the com-tech class just got, and we were experimenting with the different sound settings and modes. I can relate to the word wait because the person playing was Mr Sloos of course, but I would love to be able to play like that someday.

    Creative Experiment: Asking Why

Asking why is very important because especially in an industry like this, where sometimes you have to do a 5 second commercial for something, you have to ask yourself, “why is this important? Will it help me get my message across better?” If you can’t answer those 2 questions at least, then it is best to omit that thing from your project.

    Daily Dose:

As I am sitting writing this post right now, I am listening to Sloos just jamming out on the keyboard, and jiust taking the time to listen is so important to truly appreciate music.

    Daily Act:

Today I will be an amazing listener and hear the wise things that are said to me.

  7. Creative Word: Deliverance

This sound is just me moving around in my bed. It sounds very busy, but kind of cool. I recorded it with my phone of course, and I figured I’ll do that sound because I could think of nothing else to do. I guess it is better than turning in that than nothing else though.I think I can get some pretty cool sounds out of this recording, and use it in my song.

Creative Experiment: Fake it ‘Till You Make It

I do this all the time, because I find myself a lot struggling to find the right thing to say when writing, or what to do next when doing a creative project. I will usually either do something else to distract my mind and wait for the idea to come to me, or I will do something semi productive like for example, creating beat loops on a DAW until I know what kind of sounds I actually want to make.

    Daily Dose: Any Which Way

I agree with this Daily Dose because it is very true that everyone has their own way of connecting to their creative spirit. Most people don’t understand that there is no certain way of how to induce creativity, because no one is the same. I believe that anybody should be able to do anything they want (within reason) to get inspiration for creativity, whether it is just lying down and staring into space, or going bungee jumping, it’s up to you.

Daily Act: With a Scream or a Whisper

Today I will do my best to try to connect with my creative spirit, even though I am literally going to be working all day today, whether it is school work or umpiring baseball.

  8. Oliver Campbell-Wednesday May 13 2015-Week 3-day 4-11:22 am

    Creative Word: Obstruction

This sound is me zipping my backpack up and down to create the authentic zipper noise. I might use it to create obstruction in my songs to maybe stop a beat, and use it for a build up or drop.

Creative Experiment: Take a Second Look

All the time I ask myself, is this really necessary? How will this help me improve myself in a way that is meaningful and important? I am so busy as is, that I need to differentiate between the things that need to be done quickly and the things that can be left on the back-burner. For example, when I first started doing the daily meds, I thought, “What good is this doing for me?” and “I could be doing my other homework from my two other courses instead, or doing extra curricular activities.”

    Daily Dose: Know It All’s

All the time in my classes people come to ask me and trust me to have the right answer. One good example is when I had hospitality last semester and we were making pizzas for the first time. Well, I was the first to start my pizza and I ended up using the wrong flour because there were two different bags of flour in the bin and I thought they would be the same (because why would you put two different things of flour together?). Everyone saw that and followed me, and they ended up with crappy pizza dough as well. So it ended up that my mistake was blown up in the entire class. People think I always have the answer, and most of the time I do, but not everyone gets everything right.

Daily Act: Knowing What I Don`t Know

Today for example, I will ask people for suggestions on my Ford Campaign and ask for guidance on how to do my music assignments.

    Creative Word: Contemplate

This sound is just Sloos and Will talking to each other. I feel this recording is appropriate for the the word “contemplate” because I am thinking to myself, is this a good recording? How will I use it? I guess the only way to get an answer is to actually try using it, which I plan on doing so this weekend.

    Creative Experiment: Being of Service

I can totally relate this experiment to how we do the Ford campaign. When we go up and present our ideas to the class, we critique each other and give our input on the campaign idea. This helps me a lot because I can see what other people are doing, as well, I can learn how to critique myself by critiquing others and their work.

Daily Dose: Mountains out of Molehills

I find myself doing this more than I should. Like this week, for example, I had a huge history project due, a big history test, and all the college work. I have learned I need to do things a little bit at a time, and that eventually I will get over it. Now I am so glad that this week is finally coming to an end, and I can finally focus on my video contests and music. I have no idea yet what I’m going to do for it, but I am excited to get working.

Daily Action: Focus on the Task at Hand

Today I will focus on finding the right sounds for a song and not focus on the song altogether at once.

  10. Oliver Campbell-Tuesday May 19 2015, Week 4 Day 3

    Creative Word: Radiance

This sound is like radiance because it is pretty much the same sound throughout, and it would be good for a song ending or intro, and maybe in the background.

    Creative Experiment: Meditation

Just now, I “tried” to do some meditation, and it felt pretty good. It might just be the fact that I have a cold and that the meds I’m taking are making me extremely drowsy, but I really enjoyed just sitting and doing nothing. I probably dozed off for a bit but the intermittent loud calls of my little sister and the sounds from outside would disturb me enough so that I didn’t actually fall asleep. I definitely agree that just taking the time to put your mind at rest and to just do nothing for a while is very good for not only your mental health but to help you with your creativity.

    Daily Dose: Choosing Happiness

I don’t really understand the first part of this Daily Dose, because of course things are going to turn out better when you are doing them while you are happy and willing to do it. It’s just like how some people in this college course prefer to do just music instead of a Ford campaign, and you can totally tell by what they used to do for Ford that they did not want to do it, but they just had to.

I definitely think that I will only do things that make me happy and that I will be interested in. Because really, life’s too short to do stuff that you don’t want to do.

    Daily Act:

Today I will do the things that make me happy, and I will work on projects that inspire me to do better and develop my creative abilities.

  11. Oliver Campbell-May 21 2015-Week 4-Day 5-10:35am

    Creative Word: Constancy

This sound can relate to constancy because you can use the deep tone and tempo of it for a constant sound, in the background for example. It is nice because it can help add a lot of bass to a song when it is needed.

    Creative Experiment: Acting Goofy

I think this is good to do, because sometimes when we act goofy or try to be funny, our truly creative side comes out and we can see how we can be creative, not just in a project situation, but in a situation where our playful side comes out and we can get some funny ideas to use in our projects. It’s good to switch things up a bit, because it exercises both parts of our creative side.

    Daily Dose: I Approve

I agree with this because often times we think our projects are good, but then when other people take a look at them they notice right away what needs to be fixed. As artists, we cannot develop if there is nothing to develop. I think that is why giving feedback is always important because there is always room for improvement. Nonetheless, people need words of encouragement as well, and this helps because it tells people what they are doing right, and they can further decelop their skills and they know that they are actually going somewhere.

    Daily Act: Show Appreciation

I usually tell people that I like what they did when they do something, but today I will make sure that I show how much I appreciate the artists around me, whether they’re professionals or even my classmates.

  12. Oliver Campbell-May 25 2015-Week 5 Day 2

    Creative Word: Keeping Still

For this sound I just kept my phone still and placed it on the desk and recorded it. I think i can get some pretty good found sounds from this.

Creative Experiment: Working in the Dark

I have done this before, and I must say it works pretty well-sometimes. When I am not tired this works really well, because there are hardly any distractions and you are surrounded by just what you are doing. I find this works well when you are fully alert because then you won’t want to go to sleep when you start working.

    Daily Dose: Divine Influence

I guess the thing that I take from this is that when we allow our greater sub-conscious taek control of our creativity we are more creative and end up making something better as a result.

Daily Action: Recalling a Creative spirit

I will do things that I have done successfully in the past and try to incorporate that technique into my current projects.

  13. Oliver Campbell-May 27 2015-Week 5- Day 4

    Creative Word: Force

This sound is force because I was almost forcing the air out of my mouth and it created the sort of “whooshing” sound. It also just sounds pretty forceful in nature. I can almost compare it to something like a big gust of forceful wind.

    Creative Experiment:

I really like this method, because often times when I try to do something myself, I only get one perspective on it, which is my own. It is good to get other people’s opinion on things, because when we create, we are creating for everyone, not just our selves. Also, an idea may seem god in your head, but when it comes to the time when you have to present it, it may not seem so solid, and then you just have to change/fix the idea. We did this with the Ford campaigns and it worked really well.

    Daily Dose: Contribute

I don’t know how much I will actually contribute to the music community, but I guess I already have in the sense that anyone can download any of my found sounds from Soundcloud. I just have to keep working on the music that I like, and keep improving every step of the way, and people in the music community will help me do this.

    Daily Act: Contribute

Today I will do my best to contribute to the music community, even it means just uploading more found sounds.

  14. Oliver Campbell-Sunday May 31 2015-Week 6?-Day 1-11:11pm

    Creative Word: Yielding

I think this somehow relates to yielding because it stops…because that what yielding means, right? Stopping? Either way I just thought that this was a cool sound-although it may seem a bit juvenile. I used to do this all the time, and I must admit, I made some pretty impressive impressions.

    Creative Experiment: Lollipop

I choose my task to be writing out a script and get some shots for a video contest by Thursday. I choose Thursday because it is my birthday that day, so I feel it would be fitting to get my “lollipop” that day.

    Daily Dose: I choose peace

It is very easy to say it is better to be at peace than to be in a state of stress and anxiety, but really, many times stress takes us over. I would say the best way to be at peace is to know you are dong the things you want to do in life, not just the things that you are told to do.

If you need motivation to do the things you want to do, just take a look at this motivational video by Shia Labeouf

    Daily Act:

Today I will be at peace knowing that I am going to do the stuff I want to do, and knowing that I am going to do it creatively.

  15. Oliver Campbell-Week 5?-Day 7-9:40pm-Saturday June 6 2015

    Creative Word: Create Conflict

I guess the conflict this sound would represent could be boredom or frustration, because this is the sound I make often when I am bored or just feeling “blah”.

    Creative Experiment: Random Attachment

Sitting at the kitchen table there are barely any things with words around. The only thing that is relatively close to me is my Blue-tooth Speaker, and it does have its brand it, which is TDK, and it also has its tagline: Life On Record. In a way this tagline is pretty good, especially for what I have to do for this section. “Life on Record” is something that I should think about when creating music because my music should reflect how I feel, and it should should be a good representative of me. Basically, when I make music I am sort of putting life on record in the form of sounds.

    Daily Dose: Creative Frustrations

It is very hard to get out of a habit that inhibits you from being the best you can be. Through our frustrations we can realize what we are doing incorrectly, and then we work on it. That is why frustrations are an important part of life- they help us learn how to deal with stuff, and how to get over/work around something.

    Daily Act: Growth Through Frustrations

Not just today, but from now on, I will do my best to develop creatively, and as a person in general, making the most of things.

  16. Oliver Campbell-June 8 2015-11:44pm-Last week-Day 2

    Creative Word: Looking up

It is almost midnight-I have no idea what looking up would sound like, so I just tapped on my desk with my rolled up belt.

    Creative Experiment: Mundane Work

I would say this would work, and it has even been shown on tv shows like the Big Bang Theory, where Sheldon gets a job as a bus-boy to cure his physics block. It ended up working. I often do not feel like doing chores but when I do , I have time to think with myself, and to just be occupied but still be alone.

Daily Dose: The Voice of Authority

I totally agree with this. Not just with the creative aspect of this, but with this in general. I have learned the hard way that more times than not, it is better to go with your intuition.

    Daily Action: Listening to Intuition

Today I will let my intuition take me where I need to go-and not where cultural norms and society say I need to go.

  17. Oliver Campbell-Last week-Day 3-June 9 2015-1056pm

    Creative Word: Light

I did a raspberry as my sound because it can make the mood lighter and it is sort of a lighter type of sound.

Creative Experiment: Tearing Down Problematic Truths

To be honest, I don’t really understand what to do. Like, are the false facts supposed to be positive or negative? All I know is that my problems all have to do with stress/business/lack of sleep. I just need to get sh*t done. Plain and simple.

    Daily Dose: Tune In

I definitely have those kind of days where sometimes I just feel right. I love it when I actually feel like doing work, because it helps me get work done, but it also helps me as I work, because I am in the mood to do it. Sometimes it just depends on the day you are having to see whether or not you are “in tune”.

    Daily Action: Tune Up

From now on, I will do my best to keep myself in tune, and to keep myself open to creative opportunities.
